pesticides-courses-2

This course is designed for all those involved in operating and maintaining hydraulic/ rotary nozzle type knapsack sprayers near water. Participants should have attended course Safe Use of Pesticides or hold the recognised certificate of competence ‘Safe Use of Pesticides, Environmental Factors and Legislation’.

Course Overview

At the end of the course successful participants will be able to complete the necessary paperwork to seek approval from the Environment Agency and ensure that the herbicide is approved for aquatic use. During the course they will check the direction of water flow and work in an upstream direction and where necessary assess the speed of the water. The knapsack will be used on banks and reachable weeds on water. The candidate will gain an understanding of how weed removal can affect fish in rivers, canals etc and determine the best methods and techniques to use. They will also identify where bank stability relies on the root growth for stability and the type of pesticide to use, which minimises drift and contact with water. They will also be able to identify the downstream use of the waterway; livestock drinking, extraction for domestic use, fish farms etc. Candidates will gain knowledge in personal safety such as not working alone, wearing PPE and the effects knapsacks have if they find themselves in the water.
