Chainsaws – Maintenance, Cross-cutting & Basic Felling Techniques (up to 200mm in diameter) ITA

This course is for anyone who is required to operate chainsaws, outside of forestry and arboriculture, for cross cutting and felling small trees up to 200mm only.

Course Overview

Successful candidates will be able to state and identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and locate the various standard marks along with stating and identifying required health and safety features on a   chainsaw. They will identify faults and defects on a chainsaw and cutting equipment and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer’s attention. Participants will select and identify correct tools to enable maintenance to be carried out and report on their serviceability along with carrying out correctly all routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction book and/or the lantra awards workbook. Preparing the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication, starting the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner and carrying out pre-cutting safety tests and stating the procedures if the chainsaw fails these tests are completed. Candidates must state the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks and cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths. They will go on to assess and explain the terms ‘tension’ and ‘compression’ in timber while adopting safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar. Handling and stacking timber in a safe manner, organising site safety and stating the precautions required while understanding the risk assessment procedure are covered in the course, along with assessing the tree to be felled for hazards and associated risks. Candidates will prepare trees to be felled and escape routes, fell trees that have a diameter up to 200mm / 8” safely and accurately using different techniques, de-limb felled trees in a safe and effective manner and select and use hand tools and maintain them in a safe condition and go on to take down hung-up trees using hand tools and state techniques that must not be used.
